WHY IS GAMORA?

For me, part of being a fan of the MCU is looking at other's opinions and thoughts about each project. One thing I've noticed is that many people either don't remember or don't pay attention to certain things. For this particular blog, my focus will be on Gamora and the misunderstandings about her character, specifically during and after the events of Avengers: End Game. I don't know why it annoys me so much but it does.

We were first introduced to Gamora in Guardians of the Galaxy. At first, she was a mercenary for her adoptive father Thanos and working with Ronin the Accuser to gain access to something known as The Orb, though she was planning to betray both. She met Peter Quill, also known as Starlord, who was trying to sell the Orb, as well as Rocket and Groot, who ere also trying to get their hands on it. After fighting with each other and meeting Drax in prison, the group broke out. After learning that the Orb contained the Power Stone, one of the six Infinity Stones, Ronin betrayed Thanos. However, Gamora and the gang put their differences aside to stop him and formed the Guardians of the Galaxy, finally getting the stone to Xandar for safe keeping and saving the planet from Ronin and the Kree people. In the sequel, set  a few weeks later, she finally connected with her sister Nebula, as they had been pitted against each other growing up under the rule of Thanos.

The next time we saw Gamora was in Avengers: Infinity War. Though she and the Guardians met and saved Thor, she was eventually killed and sacrificed by Thanos, which gained him the Soul Stone. In End Game, during the Avengers' time heist, her past self interacted with future Nebula and learned what Thanos was planning to do all along. She then joined the fight on the side of the Avengers and saved the day. During the battle, she interacted with Starlord. Here's where my complaint comes into play. What many fail to remember is that this is a version of Gamora that hadn't yet met Starlord and the other Guardians, which clarifies why she attacked him and didn't recognize him. I don't know why anyone was confused as to the way this interaction went down

Offscreen, Gamora left the scene of Tony Stark’s death. End Game concluded when Thor joined up with the Guardians of the Galaxy, Starlord, beyond briefly bickering playfully with Thor about who was in charge, was clearly searching for Gamora, which will likely be referenced in the next Thor movie and at the latest the third Guardians film.

The other thing people misunderstand is the relationship between Gamora and Starlord. By the end of Volume 2, in which both take place in the timeline in 2014, they end up a couple. I've seen people say that their relationship is new during Infinity War. However, that takes place in 2018, so they've been together for four years at this point. If Quill successfully finds Gamora, then what happens? She has no relationship with him or the others, aside from her sister Nebula. As for her relationship with Quill specifically, I suppose he is going to have to make her fall in love with him all over again, similar to what happened in Groundhog Day or maybe even 50 First Dates, as the Gamora that he knew and loved is dead.

Again, my issue with people is that this is not the same Gamora we came to know in the MCU. Though she was seen leaving Tony Stark’s death in a deleted scene from End Game, are we to assume she is in the current MCU timeline? Could she have somehow traveled back to her own time? It may not be a question of where Gamora is, but possibly when. If she is in the current timeline, where could she go? Thanos and his entire Black Order and armies are all gone. Starlord, though he eventually understands this is a different Gamora, clearly wants to see her and try to build a foundation with her, and possibly explain their history and how they fell in love.

From Gamora’s perspective, the only one she even knows is her sister Nebula, and it’s not even the one she knew. In End Game, Nebula did inform her that they became sisters and friends after the whole “trying to kill each other” thing. I understand why Gamora wouldn’t want to interact with Nebula and these people she doesn’t know. But at the same time, if she is indeed in the current MCU timeline, where would she go? Back to her home planet? To be a mercenary working under no one?

As for us the viewers, the Gamora we knew is dead and not coming back. It’s just frustrating when people can’t understand that this is a different Gamora with no knowledge of the Guardians, and that the past Gamora’s relationship with Quill was not new by any means. For now on, however, until we get answers, we must ask Drax’s question. Why is Gamora?
